Full Summer
June is when Hilton Head fully commits to summer. The water climbs into the high 70s, families arrive in force, and HarbourFest at Shelter Cove launches its weekly run of live music, family activities, and fireworks over the marina. The island operates at a different speed in June — faster, fuller, and louder in the best possible way.
HarbourFest at Shelter Cove is one of the island’s most beloved summer traditions, running weekly through the season with live music, waterfront dining, children’s activities, and fireworks reflected in the marina. It is free, family-friendly, and genuinely local in the way that many big-ticket summer events are not.
Juneteenth on June 19th is observed with particular meaning on Hilton Head, given the island’s deep Gullah Geechee heritage. The Juneteenth 5K Run/Walk at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park is a community event that connects visitors to the island’s history in a way that a beach chair cannot. Mitchelville was the first self-governed freedmen’s town in the United States, established here in 1861.
